Peace in Chaos

Mark 4:35-39 gives us this account. After a day filled with crowds and teaching, Jesus was exhausted and said to his disciples, “Let’s go across to the other side of the lake.”
So, the disciples took him along in a boat. During the night, a great windstorm developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that it was almost swamped.
But Jesus was in the stern of the boat, sound asleep on a cushion. Exasperated, the disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?”
So Jesus got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Calm down!” Immediately, the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. The disciples were amazed!
I have heard it said that the fruit of righteousness is peace.
In other words, peace exists where righteousness reigns. Knowing that chaos is running amuck takes only a glimpse at our world today. But that doesn’t mean that followers of Jesus can’t have peace! This account in Mark chapter 4 assures us that we can.
The pursuit of righteousness takes us to the Cross and the Word of God. Remaining close to Jesus is the only way to have peace and abundant life.
If there is chaos in your life, take it to Jesus. Allow him to reveal where you may need to course correct or what you can do to regain peace. And after you have done this, STAND firm and watch God move.
At the end of the story in Mark 4, Jesus asks his disciples, “Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?” I have never considered myself cowardly, but I have been caught having little to no faith. I am thankful that all I need is the amount of a mustard seed.
I am adjusting my perspective and living by this new awareness that the fruit of righteousness is peace and that All Things Are Possible with God.
So to quote Jesus, BE QUIET and CALM DOWN.
